Purpose To investigate the changes on corneal sensation and tear film function after penetrating keratoplasty.
Methods In a prospective study, 23 keratoplasty patients were assessed before and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after penetrating keratoplasty by using Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometry, tear film breakup time, Schirmer test with and without anesthesia and fluorescein. The fellow eyes served as controls.
Results Compared with preoperative values, corneal sensitivity decreased significantly (P<0.05) and partially recovery at 12 months after surgery. Tear film breakup time was significantly shorter after surgery (P<0.05), however, Schirmer test values significantly increased after surgery (P<0.05). In fluorescein staining of the cornea, dots were more concentrated within 3 months.
Conclusion Penetrating keratoplasty induces great damage to corneal sensation, increased tear secretion and deteriorated tear film stability.
